Some ways to Build Green

» Take advantage of renewable resources.
» Use sunlight for energy and illumination.
» Reduce the amount of material going to landfills by recycling during construction.
» Select rapidly renewable and low-impact building materials
» Ensure that windows, doors, and walls are well insulated.
» Use green roofs and rain gardens to reduce rainwater run-off.
» Use 'greywater' (recycled from sources such as dishwashing) for non-potable purposes

Delivering Successful
Sustainable Solutions

The United States Green Building Council (USGBC) has found that the average high-performance green building cuts operating costs by 50 percent and increases initial costs by an average of only 1.8 percent. Recently, the organization released a report which states that there will be $554 billion in in green construction between 2009 and 2013. For many owners, the environmental benefits of a sustainable building also translate into business advantages. Owners of green projects can expect an 8 to 9 percent decrease in operating costs, a 6.6 percent improvement on return on investment and a 7.5 percent increase in building value. The economic advantages, while great, are not the goals when constructing LEED buildings. The environmental benefits are even greater.
